Yes, dogs can eat cantaloupe. Ripe cantaloupe, honeydew and other melons are safe for most dogs as an occasional treat when you remove the rind and seeds and cut the flesh into small cubes. Melon is juicy and refreshing but high in natural sugar, so keep portions small, especially for diabetic or overweight dogs.

Is cantaloupe good for dogs?

Cantaloupe is mostly water and contains vitamin A, vitamin C, fibre and potassium. It is low in fat. The American Kennel Club advises feeding it in moderation and checking with your vet first if your dog is diabetic, because of the sugar.

Which parts are safe?

Part or product Safe? Why
Ripe flesh (cantaloupe, honeydew, galia) Yes, small amounts Cut into bite-sized cubes.
Rind No Tough; can upset the stomach, cause choking or a blockage. Also harder to wash clean of bacteria.
Seeds Remove Not toxic, but a choking risk, especially in small dogs.
Melon sweets, sorbet, flavoured drinks No Added sugar; sugar-free products can contain xylitol.

How much cantaloupe can a dog eat?

Keep treats within about 10% of daily calories:

  • Small dogs: 1 or 2 small cubes
  • Medium dogs: 3 or 4 cubes
  • Large dogs: a small handful of cubes

Too much can cause loose stool or vomiting. Start small the first time.

How to serve melon

  1. Wash the outside before cutting, so bacteria on the rind don't transfer to the flesh.
  2. Remove the rind and scoop out the seeds.
  3. Cut into small cubes.
  4. Serve fresh, or freeze cubes for a summer treat.

When to skip melon

Ask your vet before feeding melon if your dog is diabetic, overweight, on a prescription diet or has a sensitive stomach. For more fruit ideas, see can dogs eat watermelon? and can dogs eat bananas?, or check any food in our can my dog eat this? food checker.

Frequently asked questions

Can dogs eat cantaloupe rind?

No. The rind is tough and hard to digest and can cause stomach upset, choking or a blockage.

Can dogs eat honeydew melon?

Yes. Honeydew follows the same rules as cantaloupe: small cubes of ripe flesh with the rind and seeds removed.

Can dogs eat melon seeds?

Melon seeds aren't toxic, but it's best to remove them because they can be a choking risk.

Can diabetic dogs eat cantaloupe?

Ask your vet first. Cantaloupe is high in natural sugar and may not suit a diabetic dog.

Can cats eat cantaloupe?

A tiny piece isn't toxic to cats, and some cats like the smell, but they don't need fruit.
