Yes, cats fart. Like all mammals, cats produce gas as food is digested, and they pass it now and then. You rarely hear it because cats tend to be quiet about it. Occasional gas is normal; frequent or very smelly gas, especially with diarrhoea, vomiting or weight loss, is worth a vet check.

What causes gas in cats?

Cause What helps
Eating too fast and swallowing air Smaller meals, a slow feeder or a puzzle feeder
A recent food change Switch foods gradually over about a week
Milk and dairy Many adult cats are lactose intolerant; skip dairy
Human food and table scraps Stick to cat food and cat treats
Food intolerance or allergy Ask your vet about a diet trial
Parasites or gut infections Vet check and parasite control
Digestive disease Needs a vet, especially with other symptoms

For background on flatulence in cats, see PetMD.

When to see the vet

  • Gas that is frequent or suddenly much worse
  • Diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting or blood in the stool
  • A swollen, tender or bloated belly
  • Weight loss, poor appetite or low energy

How to reduce your cat's gas

  1. Feed a complete, good-quality cat food and change foods slowly.
  2. Slow down fast eaters with puzzle feeders or smaller, more frequent meals.
  3. Skip milk, cheese and table scraps.
  4. Keep up with parasite prevention.
  5. Encourage play; activity helps digestion.

Frequently asked questions

Do cats fart a lot?

Not usually. Occasional gas is normal, but frequent farting can point to diet or digestive issues.

Why can't I hear my cat fart?

Cats tend to pass gas quietly. You're more likely to notice the smell than the sound.

Why do my cat's farts smell so bad?

Protein-rich diets can produce smellier gas. Very foul gas with loose stool is worth a vet check.

Do kittens fart more?

Kittens can be gassy, especially after food changes or with parasites. Ask your vet if it continues.

Do dogs fart more than cats?

Dogs are usually more noticeably gassy, partly because they eat faster and eat more varied foods.
