Do Dogs Have Night Vision? How Dogs See in the Dark

Do dogs have night vision? Not like night-vision goggles, and they can't see in total darkness. But dogs see much better than people in dim light. Their eyes have more light-sensitive rod cells and a mirror-like layer called the tapetum lucidum that gives light a second pass through the retina.
How dogs see in the dark
- More rods. Rods detect dim light and movement. Dogs' retinas are rich in rods, while human retinas have more cones for colour and detail.
- The tapetum lucidum. A reflective layer behind the retina bounces light back through it, boosting low-light sensitivity. Humans don't have one.
- Large pupils let in more light.
- Motion detection. Dogs are very good at spotting movement in low light.
The American Kennel Club explains that rods and the tapetum lucidum are why dogs see better than us in dim conditions.
Why do dogs' eyes glow in photos and headlights?
That glow is light bouncing off the tapetum lucidum. Its colour, often green, yellow or blue, varies between dogs. It's normal, and it's why flash photos at night can give dogs glowing eyes. Turn off the flash or use soft lamp light for nicer pictures; see how to take good pictures of your dog.
What dogs give up for low-light vision
| Ability | Dogs vs people |
|---|---|
| Seeing in dim light | Dogs are better |
| Spotting movement | Dogs are better |
| Fine detail and sharpness | People are better |
| Colour | People see more colours; dogs see mainly blues and yellows |
| Total darkness | Neither can see |
Older dogs and night vision
As dogs age, they may become less confident in the dark. If your dog hesitates on stairs at night, bumps into things, or seems anxious after dark, ask your vet to check their eyes. Night lights and clear walkways help seniors feel secure. See senior pet home comfort checklist.
Night walk safety tips
- Use a reflective or light-up collar, lead or harness.
- Carry a torch so drivers can see you both.
- Keep your dog on a lead near roads and in unfamiliar places.
- Watch for wildlife your dog may spot before you do.
