Start memory #1 todayHow to use the pet lifespan calculator
- Choose dog, cat or other pet. The breed list updates for the pet you pick.
- Pick the breed. Not sure, or a mix? Choose the mixed-breed option for your dog's adult size, or indoor / indoor-outdoor for cats.
- Enter their age. Use years; half years work too (for example 2.5). For adopted adults, use your vet's best estimate.
- Add a name if you like. It personalises the result and the shareable text.
- Enter your email to see the results. You'll see the typical lifespan, life stage, estimated weekends and summers left, and signs to watch for, right on the page.
- Use it as a nudge, not a prediction. The numbers are averages from published ranges. Your vet is the best guide to your own pet's health.

How long do dogs live?
Most dogs live 10 to 13 years, but size matters more than almost anything else. Small breeds commonly reach 12 to 16 years, medium dogs 10 to 14, large dogs 10 to 12 and giant breeds often 7 to 10. Read the full guide: How long do dogs live? Life expectancy by size and breed.
How long do cats live?
Indoor cats typically live 12 to 18 years and many reach their twenties. Cats with outdoor access face more risks from traffic, fights and disease, so their average is lower. More detail: How long do cats live? Indoor, outdoor and by breed.
Common signs your pet is getting older
Ageing is gradual. Typical changes include more sleep, slower movement, stiffness after rest, greying around the face, changes in weight or appetite, cloudy eyes, reduced hearing and less interest in play. None of these alone means a pet is unwell, but any new or sudden change is worth a vet visit.
Signs a pet may be nearing the end of life
Signs that a pet may be in their final stage can include refusing food and water, losing weight quickly, withdrawing or hiding, laboured breathing, loss of bladder or bowel control, being unable to stand or get comfortable, and no longer responding to things they used to love. If you see these signs, contact your veterinarian promptly. They can assess pain, comfort and quality of life with you. For dogs, see signs your dog is dying and how to make their days count.
Make the time you have count
A number on a screen can feel heavy. The point isn't to count down, it's to notice how much good time is still ahead and to use it. A slow walk, a new park, a sunny afternoon nap together: these are the days you'll want to remember. Our ideas for special days with your dog and pet bucket list are a good place to start, and Your Pet Memory gives every one of those moments a page of its own.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is a pet lifespan calculator?
It shows typical ranges for each breed, size group or species. Individual pets vary widely depending on genetics, weight, diet, environment and veterinary care, so treat the result as a general guide rather than a prediction.
Do small dogs really live longer than big dogs?
Yes. Across breeds, smaller dogs tend to live several years longer than large and giant dogs.
Which cat breeds live the longest?
Siamese, Russian Blue, Burmese and American Shorthair cats are among the longest-lived, often reaching 15 to 20 years. Mixed-breed indoor cats are also very long-lived.
When is a pet considered a senior?
Many vets consider cats and small dogs senior from around 10 to 11, large dogs from around 7 to 8, and giant breeds even earlier. Small animals like hamsters are senior after about a year and a half.
What are the signs a pet is dying?
Common signs include refusing food and water, sudden weight loss, withdrawal, laboured breathing, incontinence, being unable to stand, and losing interest in favourite things. Contact your veterinarian if you notice them.
