Why does my cat bite me? Most bites from a pet cat are gentle "love bites" or play bites, not aggression. Cats nibble to show affection, to say "that's enough petting", to ask for attention, or because their hunting instinct switches on during play. Learning your cat's warning signs prevents most bites.

Common reasons cats bite their people

Type of bite What it looks like What it usually means
Love bite Gentle nibble during calm cuddles, rarely breaks skin Affection or grooming, the way cats nibble each other
Petting bite Sudden bite after a few minutes of stroking Overstimulation: "stop now"
Play bite Pouncing on hands or feet, kicking with back legs Hunting instinct, often in young cats
Attention bite Nip at your ankles or hand when you're busy "Feed me" or "play with me"
Fear or pain bite Hard bite with hissing, flattened ears, or when touched in one spot Fear, stress or pain; needs care and possibly a vet

These match PetMD's explanation of love bites, which can mean affection, overstimulation, frustration, attention-seeking or play.

Why does my cat bite me gently out of nowhere?

It often isn't out of nowhere. Small signals usually come first. Watch for:

  • Tail flicking or thumping
  • Skin rippling along the back
  • Ears turning sideways or flattening
  • Wide pupils
  • Stillness, then a head turn toward your hand

When you see these, stop petting and let your cat move away.

How to stop your cat biting you

  1. Keep petting short and stick to the head, cheeks and chin. Many cats dislike belly rubs.
  2. Let your cat start contact and decide when it ends.
  3. Never use hands or feet as toys. Use wand toys and kicker toys instead.
  4. Play every day with chase-and-pounce games, ending with a treat to "catch".
  5. If bitten, freeze. Pulling away triggers more chasing. Then calmly walk away.
  6. Don't punish. Scolding, grabbing or water sprays make biting worse.

When to see a doctor or vet

Cat bites that break the skin can become infected quickly. Wash the wound well and contact a doctor. Talk to your vet if biting starts suddenly, gets harder, or happens when a particular area is touched, as pain can be the cause.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my cat bite me when I pet her?

Usually overstimulation. Petting that felt good can become too much, and a bite is her way of saying stop. Keep sessions shorter and watch for tail flicks and skin twitching.

Are love bites a sign of affection?

Gentle nibbles during calm cuddles often are. Cats nibble each other while grooming.

Why does my cat bite my feet?

Moving feet look like prey. It's usually play, especially in young cats. Give more play with toys before bedtime.

Why does my cat lick me then bite me?

Grooming often includes licks and nibbles. It can also mean your cat has had enough attention.

Do kittens grow out of biting?

Many bite less as they mature, especially if they learn early that hands aren't toys and get plenty of play.
